I got in contact with Nick, drummer from Sydney post rock/metal band Dumbsaint a few weeks ago about photographing their gig at The Old Bar in Fitzroy, Melbourne and he was pretty accommodating in putting my name on the door to let me shoot away. They played a great set and since I’d been listening to their new album for a few weeks, it was cool to see them play live. Being a fan and photographer is not a good mix sometimes.
Now, when it comes to venues, there’s good and bad for different reasons. Now The Old Bar is probably decent enough for watching a local gig and it even sounded ok I guess but to photograph it, it was pretty shit as it’s dark, the stage is tiny, there’s no side, so it’s front and centre for most of the show. I was supposed to stick around for Fourteen Nights At Sea & Margins but had to bail early, luckily I was one of the lucky thirty or so who made it to Margin’s intimate cinema show last night and took a few snaps (coming soon).
The resulting dark and grainy images suit the venue and band in this setting and the band seemed to like them which is most important. Over the next few weeks I’ll be putting together a small clip of the live photos to one of their songs along with some other footage, so while I’m re-acquainting myself with Adobe Premiere Pro, enjoy.
